The Modern Corset Renaissance Catalogue

Karolina Laskowska

Size Guide

'The Modern Corset Renaissance’ is the latest exhibition offering from innovative digital archive The Underpinnings Museum. A celebration and exploration of the contemporary corset revolution, the exhibition shares the work of both modern corsetieres and the historical objects that left an indelible mark on design today.

The exhibition charts the best of modern corsetry and its historical influences, including a corset from Guinness’ World Record Holder of the smallest waist on a living person Cathy Jung, and a couture creation that took over 1700 hours of hand stitching.

The catalogue is A5, with a bound spine on 130gsm silk finish paper and over 70 pages long, with beautiful detailed technical photography from Tigz Rice and information about 15 different modern corset makers.  Introduced by Lorraine Smith ("the Bra Master"), it also has an extended essay by Marianne Faulkner of Pop Antique/The Daily Waist, and is curated by Karolina Laskowska.  View the exhibition at www.underpinningsmuseum.com

Sizing Advice

At Hepburn and Leigh, we understand that it can sometimes be hard to work out from photographs whether a certain style will fit. That's why we try to provide the best sizing help possible, and if you can't find the answer to your question on the website, you're always welcome to contact us. There are also individual size charts for each brand linked to at the bottom of the page.

Please remember that sizes are just arbitary numbers and letters - they're not personal; most of our brands are very small and have to make a decision about what size ranges to do based on their market, not on any aesthetics or value-judgements about sizes.

It may well help to measure yourself. On size charts, waist measurements usually refer to the smallest part of your middle, the blue line on the left, and hips around the fullest part of your body, the orange line.

When measuring for bras, the blue line is the underbust measurement and the orange is the overbust - it's placement may change depending on where the fullest part of your bust is.

Bra Band Sizes

In theory the UK and the USA use the same system for bra band sizes - meausre under your bust and add 4-5 inches to make an even number. In practise, different brands are using different methods and many UK brands, especially full bust brands, use your underbust measurement as your band size. US brands often run a touch larger (though notably not Elila or Rago).

Advice in the item description:

Whenever you click through to see the expanded view of a product, you'll see a description for the product. This should give you the basics - the style, the colour(s), the way the product fastens, the number of suspender clips it might have - and might also give some extra details. For example, if we find that a product is particularly stretchy, or that a style tends to run small, this is where we'll let you know.

Advice by brand:

Where possible, we try to provide the sizing information given by individual brands. Do check which brand you're buying when working out your size, as they can vary between companies, and even between styles. Please click through for more detailed information.
